First top ten finish at UCI World Cup #1 | Pietermaritzburg- Devinci Global Racing’s Steve Smith has brought home his first top ten finish of the season at UCI World Cup #1. Steve picked up where he left off last season finishing 6th and narrowly missing the podium by a mere .125 seconds. Devinci Global Racing rider George Brannigan had an unfortunate race run which included a crash on the massive 25-meter double about half way down the course.

Throughout the week, weather caused some havoc for the team mechanic Nigel Reeve as Pietermaritzburg was pummeled with 115mm of rain in 48 hours forcing Nigel to contend with the ever-changing conditions. However as time drew closer to race day, the weather cleared up and temperatures reached into he high 20’s causing the course to get progressively faster.

The Pietermaritzburg course is known for its long pedaling sections and this proved to be challenging for all riders in the field. After Saturday’ qualification, Steve was sitting in 16th and George in 46th, in his first World Cup since graduating from the junior ranks.

Race day Sunday was 28 degrees and sunny. As Stevie left the start gate, Steve Peat sat in the hot seat. By the first split, he was just ahead of the current leader Peaty. But by the time he crossed the finish line, he missed the podium by 0.125 seconds.

After the dust settled, Steve ended up with a 6th place finish in a stacked field of riders.

The next stop for Devinci Global Racing includes the US Open followed by back to back World Cup events in Fort William, Scotland, and Leogang, Austria.
